The most important considerations for the planning, design and development of degree programmes in translation/interpreting are over what educational philosophies are to be followed and what pedagogical models are to be adopted, with regard to curriculum structure, course material and the approaches and methods of teaching to be used, so that the given goals of education will be achieved. This paper offers a discussion of these issues within the Hong Kong context. It first surveys the general situation of Translation Studies (TS) degree education in Hong Kong, covering bachelor, master and doctoral degree programmes across the region. It then studies the case of the Translation Programme of the Hong Kong Baptist University. The discussion aims to throw light not only on how TS degree education operates in Hong Kong but also on how developments in Hong Kong may serve as a benchmark to compare parallel TS degree programmes elsewhere, especially in the greater China region.
